federal investigators this morning and joins you now -- and joins us now with this live report. >> reporter: good morning, tori. yes, it's been almost a week since this fireball and explosion and fire here in san bruno. there are still so many questions. the ntsb is out here this morning. we're getting more information about where this investigation is headed. key among the question is how did this start, obviously and why did it burn so long? let's talk about the cause. the ntsb has been asking for anyone to come forward if they smelled gas in the days leading up to the explosion. there have been about 90 e- mails sent to the ntsb. but the ntsb said they only had one person who smelled gas and that was two or three weeks before this happened. if they didn't smell gas, that would be a clue. >> if people smell gas in advance, that suggests a failure, where gas is coming out and people smell it. that's a different kind of failure than a catastrophic failure. that would help us determine the cause of this explosion. that's why that's so crucial to us. >> reporter: there's also the

to the environmental director about this task. and she joins us live. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: yes, i just spoke with dean peterson, who is the director of the environmental health division of the county. he wants to get crews back to work. i want you to take a look behind me. we are on clairemont and vermont. and you can see the devastation throughout here. work is going really three home sites at a time. so you can see kind of in distance where there is an excavator and bulldozer over there. we assume that that's where some of the work will be going on. they are going piece by piece back here. and that process does continue. this morning, dean peterson told me that operations yesterday, which was the first day of demolition, went well. the first to actually finish yesterday as planned. but they are expected to be cleared up sometime this morning. and crews move onto the next three. there were more than three dozen homes destroyed. and so far, the county has been given the go-ahead to clear the sites. health concerns, a big issue out here. but the air is being monitored, both right next t

. anne makovec is at san quentin prison in marin county to tell us why. >> reporter: if the plan that was in effect on monday would have stuck, albert greenwood brown would be dead right now but he is alive behind me at san quentin this morning because of a decision by a federal judge last evening. brown would have been california's first execution in almost five years, but judge fogel suspended the execution until he finishes reviewing a lawsuit against california's lethal injection procedure. concerns that it's cruel and unusual punishment. if the first of three drugs administered doesn't work properly, the inmate could suffer extreme pain from the third drug which stops the heart. the family of brown's victim just wants it over with. here's her brother speaking about what it was like after his 15-year-old sister disappeared. >> i remember getting in the truck with my father and... always gets us there... ... sometimes it just takes us a little longer to get back. ♪ a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza back up to the macarthur maze. there was an oil spill on the upper deck after a bus lost its transmission. that's why we are so badly back up for this necommute. the meter and lights were turned on a very close to 6:00 a.m. you can see things are backed up let switchover showing you traffic trucker interstate 80 is backed up all along the glory short freeway. we are seeing indications of of back up in macarthur maze. let's back that out a bit you can see there ride coming down from the freeway is definitely slowing things. slow from children's hospital in the westbound direction. a big problem for this commute. you can see all approaches are born to be jammed for a while. let's take go look at another problem interstate 580 in the westbound direction the back up from 2 05 interchange through the altamont pass towards airway boulevard. that was where there was another spill. the traffic has moved much better through livermore. the problem is a back up reach

's burn center told us just about 15 minutes ago that the firefighter from the bodega fire department is in stable condition. back here the fire crews will be keeping an eye on that burn area throughout the night. reporting live here in sonoma county, mike mibach, ktvu, channel 2 news. >>> that same heat wave that fuelled the fire also drew thousands of bay area residents to the beaches today. crystal clear blue skies and temperatures soaring to 91 degrees in the city were reason enough to hit the ocean beach in san francisco. parents brought their children. friends brought their friend. and a lot of people brought their dogs. there was barbecuing, kite flying, sun bathing and frisbee. some ignored warnings about rip tides and strong currents to cool off in the surf. the high temperatures across the bay area have prompted officials to declare tomorrow spare the air day. the hot weather combined with light winds will contribute to poor air quality. the bay area air quality are urging people to carpool, take public transit or drive as little as possible to help prevent smog. people with

was shot and spoke to a man who lives across the street. he told us he heard 30 shots from what he thought was an assault rifle. and says he hit the ground immediately. it was around 10:30 last night in the 1200 block of 87th avenue. after getting up and making his way outside, he saw family members running out of that house, screaming, they shot mama. police are not releasing any information about the woman. but the neighbor told us, he thought she was in her 50s, living with her large family, along 87th avenue. the man said he had just moved into the neighborhood and hadn't had any problems. so this scared him. paramedics did take the woman to the hospital. and as i mentioned, she's in critical condition. we're live at police headquarters this morning. notice arrests so far. but again, we are waiting for an update from police. reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> police in oakland are looking for two other leads. they both took place about 9:45 last night. and one of the shootings was deadly. the fatal shooting happened near a gunfight at 45th and international. polic

that will be hot for the next couple of days and it will take us to about the end of the workweek to start going down as we head towards the weekend. the time right now seven 02 a.m. let us get a checkup the commute. >> the right at interstate 580 is slow. it is in the west bound commuter direction and starting off in the altamont pass, but traffic is not at its worst year, the 2 05 interchange is not five but it is the western portion of the drive out between livermore and double in the you will find this list traffic for west bound fide, there was a minor accident and it was in the center divider, it has been cleared up but it helped to slow things down because it created a visual hazard. there right on 680 set on which the been tracking since they started construction for and then opened the new express land it ran from highway 82 highway 234 and the traffic has been fine with an express lane. the problem is north of there where the traffic tries to merge into the lane and agree to back up here and it has reached all the way into the dublin interchange for the first week of its opening and we

of the growing investigation. ktvu's jade hernandez joins us with an update. >> reporter: good morning. we've been out here since 4:00 this morning and we have been showing you how the authority is pushing the crime scene tape back. this crime lab vehicle was just -- has just been pulled into the crime scene within the last hour. this is video which we shot moments after the technicians began working. according to protocol, this shooting involved two concord officers. those officers were not hurt. those have been placed on paid administrative leave. the man officers shot and paramedics rushed to the hospital may have been a suspect wanted on several robbery warrants. they say two officers in a squad car patrolling around 2:30 noticed the man who matched the description. the officers tried to make contact along clayton road. the officers at some point in the chase got out of their squad car and an ralph the man only being described as a male in his 20s. authorities are still investigating whether the man actually opened fire on the officers. the man is at john muir medical center in walnut

having her around. >> very important for us to be here to support the family and just have closure to this terrible event. >> jackie greg worked for the california public utilities commission over 20 years which is one of the agencies investigating the explosion. so far there has been no public announcement for services for the fourth confirmed san bruno victim. pg&e has agreed to release the information just about everyone has been demanding since last week's san bruno pipeline blast. the utility has mapped its 100 most hazardous natural gas pipelines but has been keeping that information secret. two federal agencies and the state public utilities commission has laid on the pressure and it's working. >> the state public utilities commission sent this letter to pg&e specifically asking for its list of 100 most hazardous gas pipelines and their specific locations. that agency along with pg&e have been under pressure for a week by state and federal lawmakers and by the governor that the public and first responders need that information. >> it has to have the level of detail necessary

the scene. amy hollyfield tells us more. >> more than 300 firefighters from 14 different agencies pounced on the fire but it had a lot of fuel to keep it going. it wasn't until six and a half hours that firefighters got most of it contained. >> it was amazing i mean, it was so fast. from the time it happened within a minute, it was uncontrollable. >> tracy was watching television when the power went out. she was headed to the breaker box when she saw the fire. she barely got out in time. >> i got my -- i didn't even get my purse, i got my dogs and got out of there. >> it burned around highway 1. >> there is heavy fuels which is a grove of trees and scottish berms. >> they had to close the roads leading into bodega which made for a quiet saturday night. the owner the bar prepared for a large crowd but instead didn't have very many customers. >> they had to close the oysters up. >> few people who were here spent the night talking about the fire and the volunteer firefighter that was hurt trying to put it out. >> he has a wife and daughter we are all praying for him. >> a section of her home

. a witness told us what she saw. >> i just saw flames shooting through the roof and out the windows and the glass busting out. after i called 911 i took pictures. >> reporter: and these are the pictures from that woman's cell phone. she caught the fire at the height of its intensity. you can see some of the large plumes of flames shooting out from that upper right hand corner. now firefighters who we talked to are on the scene right now they were familiar with this building. that's because this is the second time they have been here. you see there was another fire at 1:00 p.m. yesterday. so this is the second time the same crew has been here in the last 14 hours. is it possible you didn't put out the 1:00 fire and that's what started at 3:00 a.m.? >> it's always possible. but we're pretty sure we had a lady come by saying she heard an explosion and when she looked out saw a flash and heavy fire in the two rooms that weren't on fire. >> reporter: so the captain went onto add the building wasn't completely secure and that means somebody on this busy thoroughfare could have gotten into
